Choosing between a GmbH and a UG depends on your specific needs. A GmbH is perceived as more established, and can build greater trust with business partners, but requires minimum capital of €25,000. A UG can be founded with less capital but is subject to stricter cash reserve requirements.

To incorporate your company, you'll need:


  • Full names of all shareholders and managing directors
  • Residential address, place of birth, date of birth, and marital status of the managing director(s)

The registration in the commercial register (Handelsregister) is the official completion of your company formation. Until then, your business is considered “in formation.” Once the registration is finalized, your company is officially incorporated. The time it takes for this registration depends on the local authorities and can vary by region.

In addition to the cost of your chosen company founder's pack with Qonto, you will have to pay certain administrative fees:

Notary fees

  • If founding sole proprietorships and small teams: approx. €200
  • If founding companies with multiple founders: approx. €800
  • Additional costs may incur for translations (for international clients) or permits.

Public administrative charges

  • Business register listing (Handelsregistereintrag): approx. €200
  • Business license (Gewerbeanmeldung): €20–60, varying by city
  • Transparency register listing (Eintrag ins Transparenzregister): approx. €5/year
  • For special types of businesses with specific permits, higher fees may arise.

If you have an eID, you can conveniently conduct your notary appointment online via a video call. Alternatively, it can be done in person. English translation for your notary appointment is also available.

At the moment, most notary appointments are conducted in German. English-speaking founders may experience longer waiting times, may need to travel further for in-person appointments, and could incur additional costs at the notary and for our service.
